I do D3D atm... it wasn't very difficult to learn as there are MANY D3D sites out there. One bad thing about D3D is if you go overboard with some features it can lower your fps. Other than that it's a fun thing to mess around with and come up with new ideas
When I first started coding game cheats I went to clienthooking... not recommended, seriously. Everything becomes very frustrating when you don't have a clue about not only the language you're working with, or the engine, but also the reverse engineering involved.
Start slow, learn the language, do beginner stuff (gfx driver hooks) then learn your way around your favourite disasm software.
