I'm not Chaplja nor kobject, but gave it a try:
Terminal commands are written in Italic.
    1. Open a terminal.
    2. Type vi test.c or nano -w test.c or vim test.c.
    3. Type in your code, save & exit.
    4. gcc test.c -o test (in case of threaded use, you can add extra arguments, such as gcc thread.c -o thread -lpthread)
    5. Type in: ./test.
    6. Enjoy!
If you prefer a more user-friendly coding environment, I'd suggest Eclipse.
You can check it out at Eclipse.org, but no need to download it there. Just open up a terminal & type in: sudo apt-get install eclipse. You can also install additional packages, check sudo aptitude search eclipse for a full list.

Look into SciTe as well. Its a nice text editor with compiling options and things. Small and nice. I made the change from windows as at uni i am doing java so it is better in fedora than windows... I was over vista to

    http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html

No games now, except ArmyOps 2.5 :/

You could grab a .rpm file from here
    http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/se...submit=Search+...

in terminal change to root then the directory where the rpm is... then
    to install

    type rpm -i <name.rpm>

    have fun

I'm afraid so, because it will still reach & wipe the user directory where you'll likely store all your data! muppetalert this is very irresponsible. Some newcommers might actually do this and get harmed, and leave linux with a bad impression of its user base.

Firecracker I'm very delighted to see you have knowledge of gcc and linux!

Couch, linux is a programmer's heaven, and it is where I learned programming. If you stick with it you can't fail but love it. gcc (for C) and g++ (C++) are standard, like Fire said, most distros ship with them included.

For the full experience you can use my favourite editor vi, but if you prefer a more wysiwyg approach you can use gedit, kwrite, scite or the full IDE's like eclipse and kdevelop. (though both are huge resource hogs)

Anyway this is a huge subject strongly linked to linux internals and systems, best advise I can give you is to learn how to use the 'man' pages and read the linux howto pages, they are a huge asset
    http://tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/index.html

    good luck
    int *(*(*(*x)()) [10]) ();

Wouldn't trade my debian for the world... :-*

Who is so stupid to store their data in the home folder anyway?
My bad though: I overlooked the '-f' argument, without it, it will ask whether to descend in each folder structure, so you've got an extra change to cancel before any harm is done.

Also even though C/C++ seem to be most talked about here, you might want to look at coding with python too (if your into more general programming)
